END OF DAY REPORT - 'from the team out there'
Subject: Day Four - East Lulworth to St. Just
Well what a day its been...293 miles and surprise surprise we finished late again!!
The whole day has been cloudy with only occasional bursts of sunshine and one blast of rain, and the tops stayed down all day!! The roads have been spectacular though. At least with the weather like it was there was the chance for Gary's face and Chris' ears to recover from the violent glow that could have been used should the lighthouse have failed!
The Weld Arms was today's starting point and there were only the six of us die-hards at breakfast....we were woken by the sounds of tanks rolling onto the ranges nearby, or at least we thought they were tanks - it could have been Gary's stomach!
We stopped at the prison in Portland....Liz's birthplace although she promises us that she wasn't born inside, and then to Portland Bill Lighthouse where the mist was prevailing and all that could be heard was the lighthouse's fog horn...it could be warning of either the weather or of us arriving!
From Portland we followed the Chesil Beach passing slowly through beautiful thatched cottaged villages, to West Bay where Gary used to live, and which is now well known for Nick Berry's TV series 'Harbour Lights'... We took a slight detour to make up time and drove to Seaton where there was a fantastic view over the cliffs to the sea. There was then a section of superb single track roads where Mark lost his cap - either because of the wind or because of Gary's manic exhaust, but fortunately the cap was recovered by Terry in a very speedy fashion as certain death by squashing would soon have followed.
We lunched at a little pub where, just as we were arriving, one of the elderly locals was helped through the door by John, who received the following comment..."Oh! it's not easy when your old and drunk"...and then the old boy clicked the central locking on his Freelander and got in and drove off!!
Mark then took a turn to drive Gary's car, and while Gary was navigating, Mark was heard to say..."Bloody Hell, its just like a race car - the hotter it gets the louder it gets" Now was that Gary or his exhaust!? Answers on a postcard please!!
In one village the wildlife problem was completely out of control...but it wasn't cats, dogs or even badgers this time..it was old ladies stood in the middle of the road! Andy, have you got anything for this!?!
There were three ferries today, and this report was written while waiting for the one that crosses river from Torpoint to Plymouth and again while crossing from Bodinnick to Fowey. There have been some terrific roads slightly spoiled by fog, but tonight Mr Gary Smith succeeded in completing a wheel spin!! HURRAH!
Due to time constraints (at time of writing some 80 miles to go and its 7.30 pm)
we are taking slightly more main roads than we would have otherwise have done, but its been a long day, and the farmhouse at St. Just beckons like you would not believe!!
Despite the time and the weather it was compulsory to visit the most southerly point of the UK Mainland - The Lizard. What more could anyone ask for in a view!? You can see by the photos just how lovely it was! And to make it even better, the icing on the cake was the road which led to and from The Lizard....flat out swooping bends and twisties that had us all refreshed even after 11 hours of driving!
70 pictures taken today....fantastic!! So we've selected the best for you to see!
It's 11.15 and alls well (except that John Mason hasn't turned up yet from the trip back from the Lizard!)....hope you all enjoy the photos!
Will write again soon.
Here's praying for more sun!!
